Birds & Aviaries

The latest news; 16 August

perhaps the most interesting news is that the pair of Californian Quails hatched 7 eggs in the aviary, four of which have survived and are just starting to get their first proper feathers. The Chinese Painted Quail chicks (6) have just been taken out of the aviary. A pair of Bobwhite Quail have been introduced into the Lovebird aviary - hope to make it three species that breed without artificial incubation.

The Silverbills that I reported last time as fledging actually turned out to be hybrids with Bengalese, and rather nice they were. The Silverbills in the other aviary have fledged 3 young (no Bengalese involved!). The new pair of Hecks hatched out 4 chicks but failed to feed them, however they are again on eggs so better luck this time. No results yet with the Manakins or the Cherry Finches.

The blue Red-rump chicks turned out to be 1 blue and 1 silver and are now ready for sale.Cockatiels raised three chicks the first of which has left the nest box this morning and the 3 new Rosella chicks are also out of their box.  The pair of Parotlets have two chicks which are growing well.

As usual I am always looking to aquire more birds, there are quite a lot of species available but unfortunately the prices are high at the moment especially for the more exotic finches and other small birds, and this is reflected in our prices!

Feel free to come and look at our outdoor aviaries where we are breeding a number of species.

Last season we were successful with:

  • Budgies
  • Cockatiels
  • Golden-mantled Rosellas
  • Red-rumped Parakeets
  • Zebra Finches
  • Bengalese Finches
  • Cut-throat Finches
  • Silverbills
  • Diamond Doves
  • Orange-billed Croaking Doves
  • Chinese Painted Quails
  • Java Sparrows

Golden-winged Pytillas, Heck’s Grassfinches, Star Finches, Splendid Parakeets and Barrabands all laid but were unsuccessful in raising the young.

Watch this space for regular updates on new arrivals and any further luck we have in breeding success.
